Simon Mercer

Simon Mercer became Musical Director of Marple Choral Society in September 2002.

Simon was brought up on the South Coast where he studied the organ with Alan Thurlow at Chichester Cathedral and the trumpet with Crispian Steele-Perkins. He read for the Degree of BMus(Hons) at the University of Sheffield continuing his organ studies with Graham Matthews at Sheffield Cathedral. He then spent a postgraduate year at the RNCM studying the organ and harpsichord before returning to Sheffield for a research year.

Simon has held a number of posts including Assistant Organist at St George's Church Stockport; Assistant Musical Director of St George's Singers Poynton; Assistant Director of Music at Cheadle Hulme School; Director of Music at St Ambrose College and Director of the Choir of the King Edward Musical Society of Macclesfield. He has given organ recitals in Chichester, Sheffield, Arundel, Dunkeld and Vienna.

Simon is currently Music Co-ordinator at Ridge Danyers College, Academic and Organ Tutor at Junior RNCM and an examiner for the Associated Board.
