Robert J Morton
Business 1976-1991
Through my business, I contributed to projects from simply providing fresh ideas all the way to taking a full part in their practical realisation. I still can.

My Trading Name

I registered the trading name 'Eastern Business Systems' in London on 24 November 1977 Reg. No. 1959836. I registered for VAT in September 1977 Reg. No. 215 0183 10. I am still registered Jan 2002. I started my business in June 1976 and traded through it full time until April 1991, always maintaining a detailed log of projects and produt sales. Although I have done no revenue-earning work for a long time, I am still, in effect, open for business.

Services Provided

I was flexible in the way I made my skills available to clients. However, to help define them clearly I expressed them as a set of formal services together with a summary of my general procedure for delivering them.

Working Facilities

In 1976, forced by illness in my family, I had to find a way of working from home. To this end, I had my house redesigned and extended in 1984 to include a well-equipped office/study immediately accessible from the entrance hall.

Working Method

I found working as an independent artisan an effective way of bringing my IT skills to bear on client problems. During the so-called skills shortage of the early 1990's I wrote an article (one of many) suggesting how this more flexible way of working could help reduce the effect of this shortage. The technical solution to marketing IT skills proposed in the article has however been long since superseded by the Web Site.

Terms of Business

Assignments were so varied that it was usually necessary to formulate a new contract in each case in co-operation with the client concerned. The only standard terms I used consistently are those of my software licence agreement on which I wrote a commentary explaining the reasons and thinking behind its clauses.
