Footnote on Business Activities Just for the record: I did spend far less than the DSS penalty limit of 16 hours per week on my business from 1991 to 1997. I spent the rest of my time on the futile chore of actively seeking work with an employer, as the law required. I also spent time updating my skills.

The profit from my residual business after 1991 is shown in the adjacent graph. The early heavy losses are due to my massive spend on promotion and travel to try to sustain my business in the depth of the recession. Slow and non-payers contributed much to these losses. These losses had to be met out of welfare, which was devastating. What eventually crushed my business completely was the DSS savings limit penalty. I could neither amass nor borrow enough working capital to buffer the assynchonism between business + domestic incomings and outgoings without it relentlessly evaporating at over 20.8% per annum. In 1998 I therefore decided to give up all ideas of re-starting my business.
